As we enter the traverse space, it’s immediately apparent that this performance will weave technology and props deeply into its narrative. Microphones, lamps, laptops and chairs are scattered across the stage and at the far end, a figure waits. He guides us through various stages of his life, exposing the cultural pressures imposed by his mother, whose voice we hear in recurring voiceovers asking him to send money, we witness the turbulence of his unbalanced relationships and the overwhelming sense of obligation to excel and succeed at work.
He skillfully manipulates distorted voices through the microphones to bring different characters and inner dialogues to life, creating a unique and immersive sensory experience. As he is increasingly pulled in different directions, the breakdown of his sense of self is symbolised by the removal of various body parts. These poignant moments offer a raw insight into the character’s pain and unease with Chris Fung pouring everything into his performance, making us viscerally feel the depth of his anguish.
By the end, we’ve fully experienced his emotional rollercoaster – a journey that is experimental, engaging and evocative. THE SOCIETY FOR NEW CUISINE is a bold and intimate exploration of storytelling, with Chris Fung delivering an exceptional energy and commitment to this innovative approach to what theatre can be.
