54.60 AFRICA written and directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr. ★★★

Inspired by Femi Elufowoju Jr’s personal mission to visit all 54 African nations before his 60th birthday, 54.60 AFRICA follows 11 friends who take on the same challenge. Their goal is to show the world that Africa is a continent to be celebrated, not overlooked. Through encounters with locals, dance, song and the snapping of selfies to document each step, they embark on a journey of discovery and reflection. ‘Seven days from now, scrapbooks full, we meet again.’

Each friend ventures to a different country, updating each other as they travel the continent. It’s an ambitious and comprehensive narrative structure, reflecting the scale of the mission. The choice to split the journey among 11 characters, each echoing elements of Elufowoju Jr’s real experience, feels both imaginative and somewhat hectic. I wondered whether the story might feel more grounded if it focused on a single character embodying the writer’s journey, with the rest of the ensemble bringing the continent’s cultural nuance to life. This might offer a clearer emotional focus and deepen the audience’s connection to the personal motivations behind the quest.

That said, the cast delivers with exceptional energy and dedication, balancing tension, humour, movement and audience rapport. The live score by The Ganda Boys – Denis Mugagga and Daniel Sewagudde imbues the story with rhythm and vibrancy, adding depth and pace to the storytelling.

A big shout out to Munashe Chirisa, who masterfully embodies a range of characters with wit and skill, prompting loads of laughs from the audience! Also, a special mention to Femi Elufowoju Jr. himself, who stepped in for an unwell cast member – his presence highlighting his deep connection to the real adventure he embraced.

54.60 AFRICA takes us on a whirlwind, sometimes sprawling journey, travelling far both physically and emotionally to recount a unique experience that places a celebratory and inquisitive spotlight on the continent. The commitment and enthusiasm of the performers keeps the journey engaging and the buzz from the audience was evident – catch it until 12th July at the Arcola Theatre. Mon – Sat, 7:30pm / Sat mat, 3pm.
