REALITY BITES by Jamie Christian. ★★★

In a world oversaturated with reality TV, from Love Island to Big Brother to The Only Way is Essex, theatre that attempts to interrogate this subject feels timely and necessary. REALITY BITES takes on this task with promise, presenting four monologues from individuals either directly involved in or somehow impacted by a fictional reality TV show of the same name. The concept is compelling – a Naked Attraction style show that leaves its contestants exposed (both literally and emotionally). We meet Chris (Luis Donegan-Brown), Max (Simeon Willis), Patti (Laura Shipler Chico) and Joshua (Robert Eades), each bringing a different connection to the show. While only Patti has appeared on Reality Bites as a contestant, the others reveal the indirect result of knowing someone who has.

The performances are strong and engaging, but it’s Laura Shipler Chico’s portrayal of Patti that stands out for me. Her monologue communicates a vulnerability and desperation to be seen following a divorce and the crushing realisation of having become a national joke. The depiction is moving, convincing and for me, the emotional pillar of the play. Her story feels the most grounded and honest in exploring the central theme of REALITY BITES – the psychological and social fallout of putting yourself in the spotlight and the repercussions of coping with an audience who demand to be entertained.

Despite the play’s topical concept and committed performances, the decision to focus largely on characters who are indirectly impacted by the TV show dilutes the key message. At times, the other monologues feel disconnected from the core premise and as a result, the critique of reality TV’s often detrimental consequences feels somewhat underexplored. Perhaps concentrating the narrative on Patti and exploring her relationships with family members such as her ex-husband or children following her appearance on the show, could expand the resonance and clarity of the message. Just an idea!

REALITY BITES raises important, challenging and refreshing questions about voyeurism, superficiality and the harmful aftermath of partaking in a TV show that ultimately aims to amuse and engage viewers. It definitely made me think, but I craved a more nuanced and focused connection to the message behind the consequences of reality TV and entertainment today. Catch REALITY BITES at Arches Lane Theatre (such a cool venue!) until 20th July! Tickets available here.
