Ten years after its original debut, FOUR PLAY returns to explore the intricacies of modern queer relationships, diving into the tensions between monogamy, open relationships and the unspoken expectations placed on queer partnerships.
We meet Rafe (Lewis Cornay) and Pete (Zheng Xi Yong), a couple seven years into what they describe as a happy, monogamous relationship. But when they approach their friend Michael (Daniel Bravo) and explain there is something they want to explore with him, it becomes clear that there is an element of intrigue surrounding the temptation of someone else. They beg Michael not to tell his partner Andy (Jo Foster) about their proposition and although he and Andy are in an open relationship, Michael decides to break one of the main rules – don’t sleep with friends.
As the story unfolds, we discover the plan was instigated by Pete, triggering a slow but intense emotional realisation for Rafe whose vulnerability becomes palpable. Lewis Cornay gives a truly touching performance as Rafe, effortlessly portraying his sweet, gentle character and his enduring desperation to feel safe in a relationship slipping away.
The emotional tension between all four characters builds to a gripping dinner scene, where Andy confronts the situation head on and demands answers about the couple’s secret rendezvous with their boyfriend. Jo Foster is outstanding as Andy, shifting from moments of deep betrayal to sharp wit and sarcasm with clarity and skill. It is in this scene where Brunger’s writing unpacks some key questions surrounding the often unspoken pressure queer individuals may feel to embrace non-monogamous relationships. Given the significance and depth of this topic, I felt it surfaced a little late in the play and therefore its impact as a key focus point was somewhat reduced.
Still, FOUR PLAY is a perceptive, compelling and hugely memorable piece of theatre that explores emotional honesty, sexual boundaries and the nuanced pressures queer individuals often face within relationship structures. Fantastic performances from the cast! Don’t miss FOUR PLAY at the King’s Head Theatre until 17th August. Tickets available here!
