We’re transported to the Middle Ages, where we meet Batilda Bigbum (played by the fab Bebe Cave, who also takes on an impressive number of other characters throughout). Batilda is a maiden in the town of Littledick, grappling with the pressure to find a husband. She’s constantly interrogated about her single status, highlighting the absurd expectations placed on women – not just in the past, but today too. Yet Batilda yearns for something more.
When she rejects a queue of hilariously unsuitable suitors – each bearing far too many ‘crimson banners’ (red flags, obvs) all played to perfection by Cave, we get a shrewd, funny nod to modern dating tropes that has the audience in stitches. A disappointed Batilda turns to God, deciding she might be better off becoming his bride instead…
Cave brilliantly takes down the historical (and still too familiar) expectations placed on women, weaving in sharp social commentary with genius wit and pop culture references that sit at the heart of our present-day experiences. Effortlessly shifting between characters, Cave takes us on a wild journey, peppered with moments of spontaneous audience interaction and ingenious commentary that break the fourth wall in the best way.
CHRISTBRIDE is an incredibly funny, refreshing and clever character comedy show that uses the past to speak to and comment on the present, exploring themes surrounding womanhood, identity and religion. Cave’s writing and performance is the work of an expert – you’ll laugh, you’ll nod in recognition and you’ll leave finally learning Jesus’ real accent.
Go forth and see CHRISTBRIDE – on til 24th Aug at Pleasance Dome. Tickets available here!
