MRS GARY BREATH written and performed by Ellie Ross. ★★★★★

Annie, played by the hilariously sharp Ellie Ross, is turning 34. She enjoys her job, has loads of friends and is perfectly happy with her life, but it’s still not enough for her parents. Their constant pleas for her to find “a bit of stability” come with a tempting ultimatum – they’ll release a huge chunk of her inheritance if she gets married by her 35th birthday.

We follow Annie on a wildly entertaining journey through love, pressure and self-discovery, as she attempts to secure the dosh by orchestrating a fake marriage to keep her parents satisfied. Ross moves effortlessly between so many characters, giving each a distinct voice, energy and mannerism, so the audience is never in doubt about who she’s portraying (her Ant and Dec obsessed sister is a comedy highlight)!

Her storytelling is slick and engaging, drawing us fully into the chaos of Annie’s internal and external worlds. Alongside the lols, Ross brings emotional depth and honesty to the performance, allowing us to fully understand and experience Annie’s journey by thoughtfully exploring generational attitudes towards marriage, the hype and extravagance of wedding culture, the changing definitions of success and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. Ross is so relatable, witty and charming, giving a performance that is full of warmth, truth and really clever comedy. Don’t miss this gem!
